Keystone has no shortage of gift shops where you can take home a souvenir of your visit to the Black Hills, but few are as unique as Dahl’s Chainsaw Art. Each handcrafted piece is carved from native Black Hills pine and other wood to provide you with a one-of-a-kind creation that will forever remind you of your stay. Their intricately hand-carved pieces have won international acclaim and turned their Keystone shop into a must-see destination. They have since expanded their business to include additional shops in Hill City and Deadwood.
Brothers Jarrett and Jordan Dahl have been using chainsaws to create bears, eagles, and other works since 2004. When visiting their gallery, browse through the many sculptures for sale; from pint-sized owls to a massive sculpture of a Native American holding an eagle, you’ll find a large selection of sizes in every price range. Can’t find exactly what you’re looking for? No problem—the Dahls are happy to create a custom carving perfectly suited to your needs. Size doesn’t matter; their biggest work of art was a 30-foot tall archway weighing 36,000 pounds. Don’t miss the motorcycle and bison carvings; for a small donation, you can have your picture taken atop these intricately detailed sculptures. If you time your visit right, you might even be able to catch a live demonstration.
The next time you’re in town, be sure to stop by and check out the latest from the “carvers of the Hills”…and consider taking home a piece of the Hills yourself!
