Bear Country USA
Welcome to Bear Country USA, Established in 1972
Very few people have had a full-grown black bear look in the window of their family car, or if they have, it was not by choice. Even fewer have seen a reindeer or an elk up close. However, many people are getting experiences like these at Bear Country U.S.A. in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Nestled over 200 acres amidst towering pines and along rolling meadows just eight miles south of Rapid City, Bear Country U.S.A. offers visitors intimate views of most North American mammals. Visitors take a leisurely three-mile drive through several enclosures and encounter black bear, elk, reindeer, deer, cougars, bobcats, rocky mountain goats, bighorn sheep, dall sheep, pronghorn and buffalo. After your leisurely drive, you can enjoy our Wildlife WalkThru where you will see many smaller animals native to the midwest region and our bear cubs!
At this “the home of the largest collection of privately owned black bear in the world”, Bear Country U.S.A. guests are guaranteed to see more than they bargained for. Don’t forget to also visit our Gift Shop or Cub grub snack bar!

Battle Creek Lodge has an extensive and exciting history in Keystone.
Originally built as the Keystone Fire Hall in the early 1900s, it served the community for years as a fire hall, youth center, and local gathering place. After the Flood in 1972, major reconstruction was required, and the City of Keystone sold the property and what was remaining of the building. It was purchased by the Cordes Family. They ran a mom & pop-type dinner and rented a couple of rooms out. Mr. Cordes was quite the craftsman and used his talents to create some amazing pieces, including the hand-laid rock fireplace that remains a guest favorite to this day.
Twenty years ago, a family with a deep history and rich ties to the Keystone community, the Alexanders, purchased the property and turned it into the Battle Creek Lodge we know today. Battle Creek Lodge takes great pride in staying true to our history and our community. Look for more information on the history of Battle Creek when you visit the lodge or on your next visit to the Keystone Museum.
We have a total of ten (10) guest rooms. Six (6) of our rooms have two (2) queen beds in them. Three (3) of the rooms have one (1) king bed along with a small sitting area and a table with 2 chairs. Our last room has one queen bed. All of our rooms have a standard bathroom with a bathtub/shower. Flat-screen TVs, coffee pots, and blow dryers, along with a small area to hang your clothing, can be found in all rooms.
Due to storage constraints, we do not offer rollaway beds or cots. We do have extra bedding available if requested in advance. Fire codes restrict the number of people per room to no more than 5.
We are always trying to better meet the needs of our guests, so please don’t hesitate to call us if you don’t see something you need. We may have it or might be able to make it happen.
Our Complimentary Deluxe Continental Breakfast is served “family style” in the lobby every morning. We have a featured item – a special item that is always hot, fresh, and tasty! – that changes daily. Some examples of favorite featured items are French Toast and Sausage, Biscuits and Gravy, and Homemade Cinnamon Rolls and Scrambled Eggs. In addition to the featured item of the day, we serve a full continental breakfast with hot and cold cereals, assorted bread, fruit, juice, etc.
Nothing is more beautiful than night time in the Black Hills — EXCEPT standing around a fire at night time in the Black Hills! With that in mind, we made a fantastic addition to Battle Creek Lodge recently with a beautiful outdoor gas fire pit for our guests to enjoy. Sitting on the side deck of the lodge, the fire pit is a perfect place to wind down after an event-filled day. Return home from the lighting ceremony at Mount Rushmore and help the kids make s’mores, or enjoy a glass of wine and some good conversation around the fire.
Fresh Hot Coffee is always available in the lobby during lobby hours.
In an effort to provide more convenience for our guests, we do have a BBQ grill on site for your use.
We feel lucky to live in such a beautiful part of the world and we try to share as much of that world with you as we can. We have many sitting areas located around the lodge and the property for our guests to use. We encourage you to use these areas and to walk around and take in the beauty that surrounds you.
The free parking area is directly in front of the lodge and is free for Battle Creek Lodge Guests.
If you are traveling with a trailer or more than one vehicle, please let us know so we can make arrangements to accommodate additional parking if needed
